Is potential of solar energy still under explored?

Team Veye | 04-Dec-2022 solar energy

Though wind and solar are powering a clean energy revolution, Solar power in Australia is showing great promise. Its potential is highlighted by the fact that the continent has the highest solar radiation per square metre in the world.

Solar radiation per year, being an average of 58 million PJ (Peta Joules), 10 k time more than Australian energy consumption, could be a great asset for generating solar energy. High level of solar radiation can also lead to low payback times and evoke more interest from key players in this renewable energy source.

Australia, currently has the highest uptake of solar globally, with around 30% of homes with rooftop solar PV. As of 31 January 2022, more than 3 million rooftop solar PV systems had been installed across Australia.

The solar industry generally uses two methods for converting sunlight to generate electricity, through solar photovoltaic cells and concentrated solar power.

The most common form of solar power, is still through solar cells technology, where one can power home or business directly without relying solely upon the electricity grid, while with extraction method via solar power plant, large scale arrays of mirrors collect and then direct the sun’s rays to the concentration. The highly targeted sunlight then heats up water to create steam that spins turbines to create electricity.

Solar energy is a favourable source in renewables energy because of its advantage of the constant presence of the sun during daylight hours. Sunlight constantly regenerates irrespective of how rainy and cloudy it might be.

Solar power usage is growing, as innovation brings down costs. American solar generation is being integrated into the national grid without affecting reliability. In a way, solar power is the key to a clean energy future.

As the industry further booms, Australia can capitalise by expanding its solar energy manufacturing capacity since the world looks to it to reduce their reliance on China.

Australia sees the pressing need, the sizable market and the natural resource. The only thing remaining is the need to exploit its full potential.
