Why Has Chalice Mining (ASX:CHN) Just Hit a Fresh 52-Week Low?
Chalice Mining (ASX:CHN) has fallen to a fresh 52-week low.
Shares recently traded around $0.88–$0.93.
The stock is down roughly 55–60% over the past year from a high near $2.63 in January 2026.
Market capitalisation now sits near $343–$363 million.
The drop has been gradual. No single shock announcement triggered it. Instead, investors are reacting to the long wait for production at Gonneville, soft commodity prices, and weaker sentiment across junior miners.

Long Timeline at Gonneville Weighs on the Share Price
Gonneville is Chalice’s flagship 100%-owned palladium-nickel-copper-cobalt project in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt, about 70 km north-east of Perth.
The December 2025 pre-feasibility study delivered solid numbers at conservative prices:
- Pre-tax NPV: A$1.4 billion
- IRR: 23%
- Payback: 2.7 years
- Average AISC: US$370 per ounce of 3E PGMs
Modelled annual output:
~220,000 oz PGMs, 7,000 t nickel, 8,000 t copper and 700 t cobalt over a 23-year open-pit life.
The issue for many investors is timing.
Final investment decision is targeted for the first half of 2028.
First production is expected in early 2030.
Environmental approvals remain on the critical path.
That multi-year gap has left the share price exposed whenever sector sentiment softens.
Commodity Prices and Broader Sector Pressure
Gonneville’s economics are highly sensitive to palladium, nickel and copper.
Palladium is expected to be the largest revenue contributor.
Nickel has faced sustained weakness in recent years.
Rising bond yields and a firmer US dollar have also weighed on Australian junior mining stocks generally.
Balance Sheet Still Strong
Despite the share-price decline, the company remains well funded for a pre-production explorer.
At 30 June 2026 it held approximately $59 million in cash and listed investments with zero debt.
The FY26 net loss was $26.2 million, reflecting ongoing feasibility, approvals and exploration spend.
Board Refresh Ahead of Financing and Development
In mid-October 2026 Chalice announced a board refresh to strengthen expertise for the next phase.
- Ross Carroll (former MMG and Woodside CFO) will become independent non-executive chair.
- Gerard Rheinberger (former senior Rio Tinto executive) and Dr Soolim Carney (sustainability specialist) will join as non-executive directors.
The changes take effect after the November AGM, subject to shareholder approval.
The company continues to advance the feasibility study, offtake talks and environmental documentation. Independent reviews have supported the approvals pathway.
Looking Ahead
Chalice is still progressing Gonneville toward a 2028 FID while exploring other targets, including the Deep Blue copper-silver-gold system.
Analyst price targets remain well above the current share price, reflecting the size of the resource and the project’s strategic and major project status with state and Commonwealth governments.
For now, the market is focused on the gap between the project’s long-term potential and the years still required to reach production. That gap is the main reason Chalice Mining has hit a fresh 52-week low.
