Why Are ASX Mining Stocks Falling? BHP and Rio Tinto in Focus

Team Veye   October 16, 2026

Mining stocks in the ASX market are falling amid fears of inflation rise, weakening in metal prices, and uncertainties related to growth in the global economy. On October 15, stocks of BHP and Rio Tinto dropped by about 5%, and this has created stress on the mining industry. The inflation level in the US has created doubts about the sustainability of high interest rates. Bond yields have increased their appeal against stocks. Yields could push up interest costs and decrease the future earning potential of firms in the eyes of investors. Fears of weakening in the demand for copper and iron ore add to the pressure on the mining industry.

BHP Group Ltd (ASX: BHP) had shared its financial results for the year ended 30 June 2026 on 18 August 2026. The organization succeeded in earning revenues and profits as its underlying EBITDA was recorded at around US33billion.CopperwasthemajorsourceofitsunderlyingEBITDAasitaccountedformorethanhalfofitsunderlyingEBITDA.Itwasproducingaround2milliontonnesofcopperforthesecondyearrunning,recordlevelofironoreproductionandshipments.ThenetdebtoftheorganizationdecreasedtobelowUS9 billion. It announced its final dividend of 99 US cents per share. Total cash returns to shareholders for the year reached US$8.7 billion.

BHP plans to grow copper production by around 40% by FY35 through projects in Chile, Australia and Argentina. Its capital and exploration spending increased 5% to US$10.3 billion. The Jansen potash project in Canada was 84% complete, with first production expected in mid-2027. BHP said copper prices hit record highs due to rising investment in AI and electricity infrastructure. Global growth is expected to slow to 3% in 2026 while India’s infrastructure expansion continues to drive demand for raw materials.

Rio Tinto Limited (ASX: RIO) announced its third quarter 2026 production results on 14 October 2026. Despite higher copper and iron ore production, several challenges may put pressure on its shares. China’s finished steel consumption fell around 4% QoQ and 2% YoY in Q3, raising concerns about iron ore demand. Higher diesel prices and freight costs are also increasing operating expenses and reducing profits. Global economic uncertainty and Middle East tensions have added volatility to energy and shipping markets. Lithium operations faced adverse weather during the quarter while higher fuel costs could further affect iron ore production expenses.

Copper prices remained strong, reaching an average of US$14,110 per tonne during Q3 but uncertainty over US tariffs and tight supply conditions created market concerns. China’s weaker domestic consumption and investment also affected the outlook for industrial demand. Rio Tinto maintained its production and cost guidance, although higher diesel prices and currency movements could increase annual operating costs. These pressures, combined with uncertainty around China’s steel demand and global economic conditions, may weigh on investor confidence despite the company’s operational progress and growth projects.
