ANZ sits near its 52-week high but the key question is what lies ahead as investors keep a close eye on its next moves

Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ASX: ANZ)

is dealing with a changing economy while still holding a strong place in markets across Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region.

The 2025 financial year showed how the bank could stay solid and flexible as it worked on integrating Suncorp Bank, cutting down complex operations and handling global issues.

ANZ posted a statutory profit of around $6.03 billion for FY2025 which is lower than $6.59 billion from the previous year and cash profit came to about $5.93 billion which is down roughly 13 percent from last year.

Operating costs jumped 19 percent to $12.7 billion due to the Suncorp Bank deal, restructuring charges of $579 million and a one-time ASIC settlement costing $271 million.

Even though profit dropped a bit, the bank’s net interest income went up 12 percent to $17.9 billion and the net interest margin slipped a little by 3 basis points to 1.54 percent.

ANZ’s capital strength stayed solid with a Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio of 12 percent and the statutory return on tangible equity dropped by 90 basis points to 9.4 percent.

The acquisition of Suncorp Bank was a big move for ANZ which gives more size to its retail and commercial banking in Australia.

Even though ANZ’s long-term position looks strong, its stock is now trading close to record highs which could make valuation a worry for investors who prefer less risk while the fall in profits and higher running costs mean there could be some short-term troubles ahead.

ANZ expects FY2026 to be a period of stability and execution as the bank is hoping for steady loan growth, especially in housing and business areas.

Management again confirmed its focus on keeping a strong capital base and regular dividend payouts, matching its 2030 plan for sustainable value creation.
