Meta’s New 816B Open Model: What It Means for ASX Tech Stocks

Team Veye   October 16, 2026

Meta has released Muse Spark Open on 15 October 2026 as an 816B parameter open weight Mixture of Experts AI model, with around 42 billion parameters activated per token. The model is primarily designed to do coding and agentic tasks. It can perform multi step workflows like analysing code, using tools, debugging and completing software engineering tasks. It supports text, image, audio, and video input, similar to other models. It offers a 1 million token context window, allowing it to process large and complicated projects. It is now publicly available through several AI platforms and can also be self hosted, with a substantial computing infrastructure. The open model is broadly available for enterprise level AI deployment and customisation opportunities.

Potential impact on ASX tech stocks

The new model appears to be near to mid term catalyst that can have a positive impact on data centres, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, networking, enterprise software and AI software. ASX technology companies operate in software, data centres and other technology based solutions.

ASX stocks with positive impact

NEXTDC Limited (ASX: NXT) is one of the top technology based ASX stocks which provides a data centre environment so that customers can deploy their AI infrastructure.

It has reported in its FY26 results that it has a billing utilisation of 175MW, with a forward order book of 565MW. The open model news will boost the future earnings and enhance its long term value proposition.

Appen Limited (ASX: APX) is one of the top technology based ASX stocks which is a global market leader in data for the AI lifecycle.

AI models required immense amount of data training, evaluation, human feedback and specialised dataset & model testing. Appen helps with data sourcing, data annotation and model evaluation.

APX helps the organisations to launch the innovative AI based system to streamline or improve the productivity of the organisation. The new Meta will indirectly help the company, as more advanced models require more data and evaluation to provide accurate output.

Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) is one of the fastest growing technology based ASX stocks, focusing on providing AI infrastructure.

MP1 has received multiple AI infrastructure contracts via its 100% owned subsidiary, Latitude.sh. It has received around six contracts in the past three months, making its group pro forma annual recurring revenue $1.1B. 816B requires substantial computing power with heavy data and networking, which is the segment MP1 operates. The news will act as a near term catalyst for the company and increase the chance of getting new contracts over the long term.
