Lynas Rare Earths (ASX: LYC) has faced significant share price pressure despite reporting stronger revenue and profits in FY2026.

The rare earths producer recorded revenue of A$977.9 million and net profit of A$222.4 million for the year ended 30 June 2026. However, rising operating costs, production challenges and uncertainty around its expansion plans remain important considerations for investors.

With demand for rare earths linked to electric motors, advanced electronics and efforts to diversify supply chains away from China, can Lynas shares recover?

Why Have Lynas Shares Fallen?

1. Rising Costs and Market Expectations

Lynas' net profit increased from A$8 million in FY2025 to A$222.4 million in FY2026, while revenue rose from A$556.5 million to A$977.9 million.

Despite the improvement, higher input costs, including sulphuric acid prices, and expenses associated with expanding production have created challenges.

Investors will want to see whether higher production volumes and operational efficiencies can translate into stronger margins and cash flow.

2. Production Expansion Risks

Lynas has invested in expanding its Mt Weld mine in Western Australia and improving processing capabilities at its Kalgoorlie facility.

These investments could support future growth, but new facilities must operate reliably and achieve targeted production levels.

Delays, operational disruptions or higher-than-expected costs could affect earnings and investor confidence.

3. Rare Earth Prices Can Fluctuate

Rare earth prices depend on global demand, supply conditions and government policies.

Lynas achieved an average selling price of A$80.70 per kilogram across its rare earth oxide products in FY2026.

However, weaker prices could pressure revenue and margins, particularly if operating costs remain elevated.

What Could Drive a Recovery?

1. Demand for Alternative Rare Earth Supplies

China dominates much of the global rare earth processing industry. Governments and manufacturers are seeking alternative suppliers to reduce supply chain dependence.

Lynas could benefit from this shift because it produces separated rare earth products outside China.

These materials are used in permanent magnets, electric motors and various advanced industrial applications.

However, growing demand alone does not guarantee higher profits. Lynas must also maintain competitive costs and secure sufficient customer demand.

2. Higher Production and Improved Efficiency

Lynas produced 13,089 tonnes of total rare earth oxides in FY2026, up from 10,462 tonnes in FY2025.

Neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) production reached 7,260 tonnes during the year.

If production continues to increase while operating costs become more manageable, the company could improve its financial performance.

Investors will be watching upcoming production updates for evidence that its expansion investments are delivering results.

3. Growth in Heavy Rare Earths

Lynas is expanding its product range beyond light rare earths. It achieved its first samarium oxide production in March 2026 and also produces dysprosium and terbium oxides.

These materials are used in specialised applications, including high-performance magnets.

Expanding into these products could diversify Lynas' revenue streams, although the financial benefits will depend on production volumes, customer demand and selling prices.

What About the Meteoric Resources Acquisition?

In October 2026, Lynas announced a proposed all-share acquisition of Meteoric Resources (ASX: MEI), which owns the Caldeira rare earths project in Brazil.

The proposed transaction could expand Lynas' resource base and provide access to additional rare earth resources outside China.

However, acquisitions also introduce risks, including development costs, regulatory approvals and the time required to establish commercial production.

Investors should monitor the transaction's progress and assess whether its potential long-term benefits justify the associated costs and execution risks.

What Should Investors Watch?

Investors tracking Lynas shares should focus on four key indicators:

  • Production growth: Whether its mining and processing operations deliver higher, consistent output.

  • Operating costs: Whether input costs and expansion expenses begin to ease.

  • Rare earth prices: Whether NdPr prices remain supportive of revenue and margins.

  • Cash flow and expansion: Whether Lynas can fund its growth plans while maintaining financial flexibility.

These indicators could help investors assess whether the business is improving beyond short-term share price movements.

Can Lynas Shares Recover?

Lynas has potential recovery drivers, including demand for alternative rare earth supplies, higher production and expansion into additional products.

However, operating costs, production challenges, fluctuating commodity prices and acquisition risks could continue to weigh on its performance.

The key question is whether Lynas can convert its strategic position into sustained earnings and cash flow growth.

For investors, a 42% share price decline does not automatically make the stock undervalued. Assessing its valuation, operating performance and future growth prospects remains essential before drawing conclusions about a potential recovery.
