The world has been facing many complex and interrelated challenges recently. Once we view these problems in totality a broader picture may emerge to find some solution to these. This becomes all the more important to improve the quality of life in ways that simultaneously protect and enhance the earth’s life support system.
Global warming or rather climate change is one of the most defining issues of these times.
Global warming and climate change are two different aspects and are closely related and have been used interchangeably. Change in temperature is one of the many effects of climate change. Climate change encompasses global warming and refers to the broader changes happening to our earth.
Global warming refers to the rise in global temperatures due mainly to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century.
The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is likely to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia.
As a consequence of changing the natural greenhouse, we may have warmer earth. Warmer conditions will probably lead to more evaporation and precipitation overall, but individual regions will vary, some becoming wetter and another dryer.
From shifting weather patterns that threaten food production to rising sea levels that increase the risk of flooding, the impacts of climate change are global in scope and unprecedented in scale. Global sea level rose about 8 inches in the last century. The rate in the last two decades, however, is nearly double that of the last century and is accelerating slightly every year.
Such happenings do warrant serious and urgent action today because adapting to these impacts in the future will be more difficult and costly.
