Fenix Resources (ASX: FEX) has closed out its entire Australian-dollar iron ore swap hedge book early, turning the position into more than A$10 million in cash.

What exactly happened

The company arranged early settlement of swaps covering 480,000 tonnes of iron ore at an average A$151.31 per tonne for the period October 2026 to June 2027.

- Roughly A$8.5 million from the November 2026–June 2027 contracts is expected to land in October 2026.
- The October 2026 contracts (valued at about A$1.7 million) will settle under normal terms in November 2026.

Together these deliver more than A$10 million. Fenix said the move took advantage of current market conditions and sits squarely within its Price Protection Policy - designed to lock in positive cash-flow margins while still keeping exposure to higher spot prices.

Remaining hedges include 13.5 million litres of diesel swaps (covering roughly 30% of expected FY27 diesel use) and US$99 million of Australian-dollar call options running through to mid-2028.

Why it matters right now

Fenix is in a heavy investment phase. At 30 September 2026 the cash balance stood at A$43.2 million after major spending on the Beebyn Hub, a second Right-to-Mine payment, and other growth items. The September quarter also delivered a record material movement and the start of Beebyn Hub operations, while FY27 sales guidance remains 4.7–5.3 million tonnes.

The cash injection arrives at a time when iron-ore prices have been soft and the share price has traded near multi-year lows (around A$0.195–0.20 recently).

What could influence FEX shares from here

Several factors will likely shape near-term sentiment:

  • Iron-ore price direction — With the swaps closed, Fenix now has fuller exposure to the spot market. A rebound would be more beneficial; further weakness would be felt more directly.
  • Immediate cash boost — The A$8.5 million due this month strengthens liquidity after peak capital spend.
  • Operational delivery — Progress at Beebyn Hub, cost control (FY27 C1 guidance A$70–80/wmt), and the upcoming Weld Range Definitive Feasibility Study remain key.
  • Broader market conditions — Sentiment toward mid-cap iron-ore producers and the AUD will continue to matter.

-Fenix has confirmed the material assumptions behind its three-year production plan and the longer-term pathway toward 10 Mtpa at Weld Range remain unchanged.

Bottom line

Closing the hedge book converts a paper gain into real cash at a useful moment in the company’s growth cycle. How the market reacts will depend less on this one announcement and more on the next few quarters of production, costs, and iron-ore prices.
