Are Rio Tinto Shares Worth Watching After Its Q3 2026 Update?
Rio Tinto shares (ASX: RIO) are in focus after the mining giant reported higher iron ore sales, strong copper growth at Oyu Tolgoi and progress on its capital optimisation programme in the September quarter. However, lower bauxite production and a lithium outlook at the lower end of guidance highlight ongoing operational challenges.
The latest update provides insight into Rio Tinto’s production performance, but commodity prices, operating costs and share valuation remain important factors when assessing its investment outlook.

What Did Rio Tinto Report in Q3 2026?
Rio Tinto delivered mixed operational results, with higher iron ore sales and copper growth at Oyu Tolgoi offset by weaker performance in selected commodities.
1. Iron Ore Sales Remain Important
Global iron ore sales increased 3% year-on-year to 90.8 Mt, while Pilbara sales rose 2% to 85.7 Mt.
Rio Tinto maintained its 2026 Pilbara iron ore sales guidance of 323–338 Mt. The company reported 243.3 Mt of Pilbara sales during the first nine months of the year.
Higher sales volumes support operating performance, but profitability also depends on iron ore prices, realised selling prices, production costs and demand from major steel-producing markets.
2. Copper Growth at Oyu Tolgoi
Copper production at Mongolia’s Oyu Tolgoi mine increased 27% year-on-year in Q3. However, consolidated copper production remained unchanged at 205,000 tonnes, reflecting differences in performance across Rio Tinto’s operations.
The company maintained its full-year consolidated copper production guidance of 800,000–870,000 tonnes.
Oyu Tolgoi provides potential production growth, although investors will need to monitor whether this translates into sustained increases in group-wide output and financial returns.

3. Lithium and Bauxite Face Challenges
Lithium production rose 4% year-on-year to 13,000 tonnes of LCE in Q3. Year-to-date production increased 33% to 40,300 tonnes.
Despite this growth, adverse weather affected quarterly operations, and Rio Tinto expects full-year lithium production towards the lower end of its 61,000–64,000-tonne guidance range.
Bauxite production declined 4% to 15.7 Mt, while alumina production increased 10% to 2.1 Mt.
These results highlight the importance of assessing each commodity separately. Production growth does not automatically translate into higher earnings, particularly when market prices and operating costs fluctuate.

What Could Influence the Outlook for Rio Tinto Shares?
Rio Tinto has released more than US2 billion in capital year-to-date and remains on track to announce around US5 billion in capital release initiatives by the end of 2026. It is also targeting an annualised productivity benefit run-rate of US$1.8 billion by year-end.
These initiatives could support efficiency and capital allocation, although their financial benefits will depend on execution.
Investors should also monitor the following factors:
-
Iron ore prices: Lower prices could offset higher sales volumes.
-
Copper production: Sustained growth at Oyu Tolgoi could support future output.
-
Lithium guidance: Production performance and lithium prices will influence the business’s contribution.
-
Valuation and dividends: Earnings forecasts, free cash flow and dividend sustainability should be assessed against the current share price.

Conclusion
Rio Tinto’s Q3 2026 update highlights stronger iron ore sales, growth at Oyu Tolgoi and progress on capital optimisation. However, lower bauxite production and a lithium outlook at the lower end of guidance underline the risks facing the mining group.
Assessing Rio Tinto shares requires consideration of these operational results alongside commodity prices, financial performance and current valuation. The production update alone does not establish whether the shares are attractively valued.
