APA vs BlueScope: Which Big ASX Stock Is Leading the Uptrend?
Two major ASX-listed companies are attracting investor attention for different reasons: APA Group (ASX: APA) and BlueScope Steel (ASX: BSL).
APA operates energy infrastructure across Australia, while BlueScope manufactures and distributes steel across several international markets. Both delivered important financial results in FY2026, but their earnings drivers are very different.
APA reported 8.3% growth in underlying EBITDA, while BlueScope recorded A$1.27 billion in underlying EBIT, supported by stronger North American steel spreads.
But which stock is leading the uptrend?
APA Group (ASX: APA) operates in the energy infrastructure sector, while BlueScope Steel (ASX: BSL) operates in the steel and materials industry.
-
FY2026 earnings: APA Group reported underlying EBITDA of A$2.183 billion, while BlueScope Steel reported underlying EBIT of A$1.273 billion.
-
FY2027 outlook: APA expects EBITDA of A$2.26 billion to A$2.34 billion. BlueScope expects first-half EBIT of A$860 million to A$960 million.
-
Key growth driver: APA’s growth is linked to energy infrastructure expansion, while BlueScope’s performance depends on steel margins and operational improvements.
-
Main risk: APA faces risks from debt levels and funding costs, while BlueScope is exposed to steel-price volatility.
Note: EBITDA and EBIT are different financial measures and should not be compared directly
1. APA Group: Can Infrastructure Growth Drive Further Gains?
APA Group's investment case centres on its energy infrastructure assets, which include gas transmission pipelines and electricity transmission infrastructure.
Unlike steel producers, APA is not directly dependno ent on selling prices for steel or other manufactured products. Its earnings are supported by infrastructure operations, contractual arrangements and inflation-linked tariff increases.
What do the latest results show?
APA reported the following FY2026 results:
-
Underlying EBITDA: A$2.183 billion, up 8.3% year-on-year.
-
Free cash flow: A$1.118 billion, up 3.2%.
-
Statutory net profit: A$234 million, up 81.4%.
-
Distribution: 58 cents per security, up 1.8%.
The company attributed its performance to contributions from newly commissioned assets, inflation-linked tariff increases and A$80 million in cost reductions.
For FY2027, APA expects underlying EBITDA of A$2.26–2.34 billion. At the midpoint, this represents approximately 5.4% growth over FY2026.
The outlook also includes contributions from new infrastructure projects and further cost savings. These factors could support earnings growth if execution remains on track.
What could hold APA shares back?
Infrastructure businesses can still face significant financial pressure.
APA requires capital to maintain and expand its assets. Higher interest costs, refinancing requirements and project delays could affect cash flow and returns.
Investors should monitor debt levels, free cash flow and capital expenditure to assess whether earnings growth translates into sustainable distributions.
2. BlueScope Steel: Is the Earnings Recovery Sustainable?
BlueScope offers a different opportunity. Its performance depends on steel demand, selling prices, production costs and the difference between steel prices and input costs.
The company operates across Australia, North America and Asia, giving it exposure to several markets with different growth prospects.
What do the latest results show?
BlueScope reported these FY2026 figures:
-
Underlying EBIT: A$1.273 billion.
-
Underlying net profit: A$851.2 million.
-
Reported net profit: A$802 million.
-
Underlying return on invested capital: 10.7%.
Underlying EBIT increased substantially from FY2025, supported by stronger North American steel spreads, record Southeast Asian performance and cost management.
North America was particularly important, contributing A1.034billioninunderlyingEBIT,up101%year-on-year.However,AustralianunderlyingEBITdeclined28%toA188 million.
For the first half of FY2027, BlueScope expects underlying EBIT of A$860–960 million. This outlook remains subject to steel spreads, foreign exchange movements and market conditions.
What could drive BlueScope higher?
Stronger North American steel margins could continue supporting earnings if favourable market conditions persist.
BlueScope is also targeting improved operational efficiency and shareholder returns. For FY2026, it announced a final ordinary dividend of 65 cents per share and a special dividend of 70 cents per share.
However, investors should not assume that strong earnings will continue indefinitely.
Chinese steel oversupply, weaker construction demand and higher raw-material costs could pressure margins. The company's next results should help show whether its recent performance is sustainable.
3. APA vs BlueScope: Which Stock Has Stronger Momentum?
Financial results suggest that both companies have growth opportunities, but they offer different earnings profiles.
APA's FY2027 guidance points to continued infrastructure-led growth. Its relatively predictable revenue drivers may appeal to investors seeking exposure to energy infrastructure and distributions.
BlueScope's outlook reflects the potential for stronger industrial earnings, particularly if North American steel margins remain favourable. However, its performance is more sensitive to economic cycles and global steel-market conditions.
To identify the stock leading the current uptrend, investors should compare:
-
One-month returns: Which stock has gained more recently?
-
Three-month returns: Which has sustained its upward movement?
-
Relative strength: Is either stock outperforming the S&P/ASX 200?
-
Trading volume: Is rising demand supporting the price movement?
-
Valuation: Does the current share price already reflect expected earnings growth?
A company can report strong earnings without its share price rising if investors had already anticipated the results.
For that reason, recent price performance and valuation are essential to this comparison.
Final Verdict: APA or BlueScope?
APA Group and BlueScope Steel have different strengths.
APA offers exposure to energy infrastructure, with earnings supported by asset growth, tariff increases and cost reductions. Its debt and capital requirements remain important risks.
BlueScope provides exposure to steel demand and industrial earnings. Its strong North American performance is encouraging, but steel-market volatility could affect future results.
Which stock is leading the uptrend? Financial results alone cannot settle the question. APA has demonstrated steady underlying EBITDA growth, while BlueScope has delivered a substantial earnings recovery.
The stronger momentum candidate will be the company showing better share-price performance, sustained earnings expectations and an attractive valuation.
Investors should compare both stocks over the same period before drawing a conclusion.
