Alkane Resources Shares Fall 4.8% Despite $102 Million in Cash Flow — What Went Wrong?
On paper, Alkane Resources (ASX: ALK) delivered exactly what investors usually reward.
In the September quarter the company produced 40,740 gold-equivalent ounces, generated A$102 million in mine operating cash flow, and finished the period with A$459 million in cash, bullion and listed investments. Costs came in below guidance. The first fully franked dividend was paid. A $50 million share buyback was approved.
And yet the shares fell roughly 4.8%

So what actually went wrong?
A clean operational start
Alkane’s three-mine portfolio (Tomingley and Costerfield in Australia, Björkdal in Sweden) did its job. Production was steady, all-in sustaining costs dropped to A$2,805 per ounce, and the balance sheet remained one of the strongest in the mid-cap gold space. Liquidity, including an undrawn credit facility, sat close to A$570 million
Management also kept full-year guidance unchanged: 163–177 koz gold equivalent at AISC of A$2,900–3,200/oz. Nothing in the numbers suggested the company had lost control of the business.
Where the market pushed back
Three factors outweighed the strong cash generation.
Weaker realised prices
Gold averaged A$5,128/oz for the quarter - noticeably lower than the previous period. Antimony also softened. Even with better cost control, the margin compressed.
A broader gold sell-off
Gold prices themselves hit a two-month low around the time of the report. Most ASX gold stocks moved lower on the same day. Alkane was simply caught in the sector-wide move.
Ongoing capital spend
The company still spent around A$59 million on sustaining, growth and exploration work during the quarter. Investors know a busy (and expensive) growth year lies ahead, and that reality tempered enthusiasm for the cash-flow number.
In short, the market treated the result as solid but not surprising, and preferred to focus on softer commodity prices and the capital intensity still to come.
The bigger picture
Alkane remains well funded, is generating real cash, and has started returning capital to shareholders. The share-price reaction looks more like a sector-driven pause than a fundamental problem with the company.
The next few quarters will turn on two simple questions: can gold and antimony prices stabilise or recover, and can Alkane keep delivering production and costs in line with guidance while it invests in the next phase of growth?
Until then, the market has made its short-term call clear - even strong cash flow is not enough when the metal prices are moving the wrong way.
