While we are still at it, a new variant of coronavirus had been found which was growing faster in some parts of England. Switzerland, Finland, Australia, Zambia and France have also detected the variant. The World Health Organization has said in a report that at least four types of coronavirus variants are circulating the globe since the first case of the infection was reported in China way back in November 2019.
A study has found that the new variant of Covid-19 is hugely more transmissible than its previous version. This variant seems to spread more easily and quickly than other variants. The new mutant virus may spread more easily, but in every other way, it seems a little different than its predecessors. Currently, there is no evidence that it causes more severe illness or increased risk of death.
It implies that people will need to religiously adhere to precautions like social distancing, mask-wearing, hand hygiene and improved ventilation. It also means that anything we do to reduce transmission will reduce transmission of any variants, including this one.
There is an urgent need to cut down on the transmission of the variant. The vast majority of people are still vulnerable to coronavirus. Infection levels will begin to drop as enough people are vaccinated. A vaccine would teach our bodies to fight the infection by stopping us from catching coronavirus or at least making Covid less deadly.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has now been cleared for use across North America, Europe and the Middle East, and vaccination campaigns have begun in at least 30 countries. That shot and the vaccine from Moderna were both found to reduce coronavirus infections by 95% in trials of tens of thousands of volunteers.
The biggest vaccination campaign in history has begun. According to data collected by Bloomberg, more than 12 million doses in 30 countries have already been administered.
