Artificial Intelligence myth or hype?

Team Veye | 23-Sep-2019 Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is neither a myth nor a machine. Advances in neural networks have been generating huge excitement.  Modern neural networks are very simplified versions of the human brain, and that they can be substantially improved by taking inspiration from the first intelligent beings on Earth.

Before we ponder on the utility of AI, the natural question that comes to our mind is will artificial intelligence replace or will it augment humanity. When it was realised that its goal is not to create AI rivaling humans in intelligence, but rather to find ways where AI can augment human capabilities and enhance human productivity and quality of life, it evoked keener curiosity. Any AI initiative that government, academia, and industry all jointly support is good news for the future of this field.

Recently, someone had asked what differentiates humans from chimpanzees. Monkeys have strong visual systems, limbs nearly as nimble as a human's, and can show a broad range of emotions. Yet only Homo sapiens went on to dominate the world. The answer was language.

Language has allowed humans to band together and build institutions that transcend any given individual. Because of language knowledge has been efficiently transmitted from generation to generation so that humanity as a whole grows stronger as time progresses. That is why we need to find out how to integrate deep learning with classical AI logical systems before AI can truly understand language.

Before we detail out the chronology in the development of AI, let us see its potential benefits. AI can be useful in many sectors such as finance, healthcare and transportation and many more. With vast data banks, Artificial Intelligence applications can serve in almost any sector. In Australia, it is already in use in sectors ranging from healthcare to technology to mining to the environment. And many more are moving towards it.

Now what is needed is the successful integration of these AI systems into practice and real-time use. Like in healthcare, there has to be complete trust between the system and its users.

Artificial Intelligence emphasizes the development of intelligent machines that think and work like humans. Ultimately everything would be done by machines and humans controlling them.
