Is renewable energy important for the future?

The world has lately started focusing its attention on mitigating global climate change and thus stem its detrimental impacts by tackling its root cause: pollution from burning fossil fuels. At the 2015 Paris Climate Change Conference, nearly every nation on earth committed to actions aimed at shifting away from dirty fossil fuels.

On Sept. 22, 2019, an estimated 6 million people around the world joined the global climate strike making it likely the largest climate rally ever. Collapsing ecosystems are now evoking higher concerns globally.

Fossil fuels are considered non-renewable resources and consist mainly of coal, oil, and natural gas. They release carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Coal is considered cheap but only because coal plants do not have to pay for the full social and environmental costs of coal burning on people's health, the natural environment, and the climate.

Renewable energy will continue to rise in the upcoming decade, edging out fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Low cost solar, wind, and battery technologies are on profitable, exponential trajectories that if sustained, will be enough to halve emissions from electricity generation by 2030.

Wind power is now cheaper than coal in many markets; in the United States, it's now half the price of existing coal plants.

Wind and solar energy now regularly out-compete fossil fuels in most regions of the world. Electric vehicle growth has the potential to reach a 90% market share by 2030.

Iceland is the world's leader in renewable energy generation and produces more electricity per person than any other country on earth. Nearly 100% of their energy comes from renewable sources because of their unique landscape.

Researchers suggest that converting the entire world to 100% renewable energy by 2050 is both possible and affordable, but requires more public awareness and political support.
